Payyannur Sree Subrahmanya Swami Temple:
The Payyanur Subrahmanya Swamy temple is called as the Palani of Kerala. This Temple is situated at the banks of river Perumba in Payyannur,Kannur,Kerala. It is around 2 kilometers away from the Payyannur bus stand. The temple extends to 3 acres of land. The temple is believed to be constructed by Vishwakarma, based on the directions by Lord Parshurama.
Lord Subrahmanian idol of 6 feet tall is a great feature of this shrine. Apart from Lord Subrahmanian there are many other idols in the temple. Temple pond which is located at the front of the temple is large in size. A Sarpakkavu is also present within the premises with a large structure of a Serpent at it's entrance.
The temple is also famous for its pavitra modiram or sacred ring, made especially on order at the Payyanur Subramania Temple. Pavithram is a tradition ring worn during performing Vedic rituals or during the "pithrubali" in the Hindu tradition. Normally Brahmins wear it when they perform Ammavasai Tharpanam and other ceremonies. Traditional Pavitram ring is usually made of "dharba" grass. Payyanur Pavithram is made of gold and silver. Unlike numerous temples of south India, including Tamil Nadu, here the temple priest or Acharya must wear it before commencing pujas or temple rituals. The Pavithram ring is to be worn on the right ring finger and, is believed that this ring will bring luck, grace and success to anyone who wears it with the deep devotion and trust in God.
The name Payyanur is derived from the words Payyan and Poru. Payyan is another name for Lord Subrahmanian and ooru means place and thus the name Payyanur which means the land of Lord Subrahmanya.
The famous festival, Payyannur Aradhana Mahotsavam is celebrated from 1st to 14th of Vrischikam (Malayalam calendar month) which falls in the latter half of November.
