One day trip in and around Thalasserry!

The day started with visiting Kottayam Mahadeva temple which was constructed during the reign of Pazhassi Raja. This temple has a beauty of its own and is pretty big one. It has a big temple pond or Chira.

After visiting this temple we moved to Pazhassi dam and then we visited Mamanikunnu Mahadevi temple from where we had our lunch. There was a river flowing beside the temple from where we took some snaps. Then off we went to Thalasserry town to do some shopping and then a visit to Thalasserry Fort. The day ended with a visit to Kadal Palam(Sea Bridge/pier).

Pazhassi Project/Dam:

Pazhassi dam is located near Mattannur, Kannur.  The dam was named after Pazhassi Raja. There is a sculpture of Pazhassi Raja at the entrance of the project. The dam which is constructed across Valapattanam river does give a picteresque view but the site is worth visiting if you are staying nearby. Otherwise you can just strike out this place from your list. There is also a children's park next to the dam which is not maintained properly. We felt that if there is proper maintenance this would have been served as a children's park with amphitheater. Yes,  it does have an amphitheater too.

Thalasserry Fort:

Thalasserry or Tellicherry Fort is a historical monument built in 1708 by the British East India Company. During my childhood I believed it as the Fort of Tipu Sultan. Yes,  that too is true as Tipu was in charge of the Fort for a while. The monument is managed and maintained by Archaeological Survey of India. It also has a small garden. The Fort along with the garden is well maintained. It is neat and tidy.

There are few underground rooms in the Fort. And a tunnel which is believed to lead you to Kannur. Both of this tunnel and underground rooms are closed and no visitors are allowed inside this. I have gone to a distance inside the tunnel during my childhood days but later it got closed.

There is a bungalow of the sub-collector, St. Rosary Church and a cemetery nearby the Fort. Fort is situated between General hospital and St.  Joseph's higher secondary school.

Kadal Palam (Sea Bridge/pier):
Kadal Palam is a pier located nearby Thalasserry Fort. The Pier extends to the Arabian sea.
The buildings which you could see in the surroundings where godowns or warehouses once upon a time. This Kadal palam was used as a commercial access through the sea, to and from the Tellicherry Bazar, during the European rule. Current condition of Kadal Palam is not good. This is not properly maintained and the nearby fish market gives a stinking smell.
